About the LBWID

The Lake Barcroft Watershed Improvement District (LBWID) is a Political Subdivision of the Commonwealth of Virginia founded in 1973. The primary responsibilities are the operation and maintenance of the Lake Barcroft Dam and conservation of Lake Barcroft and its inherent environmental qualities. The contributing watershed poses many challenges for the LBWID, such as stormwater runoff that transports sand and sediment, leaves and yard waste, and trash into Lake Barcroft. The LBWID addresses these challenges by dredging and removing the thousands of cubic yards of sediment along with the tons of trash and debris that wash into the Lake on an annual basis.

The LBWID is a governmental body with taxing power and functions with an annual operating and capital budget of approximately $1,700,000, full-time paid staff, and several external support contractors and consultants.  LBWID Trustees (three Lake Barcroft property owners) are responsible for overseeing the governance, strategic direction, financial health, and legal and ethical compliance of the LBWID, and ensuring that it operates in the best interests of its taxpayers. In addition, LBWID works with State and local governments (Fairfax County and the City of Alexandria) on a variety of matters regarding the Lake and Dam.

One of the LBWID’s main stakeholders is the homeowners association that represents the approximate 1050 homes that make up of the Lake Barcroft community, the Lake Barcroft Association (LBA). The LBWID and the LBA share the same boundaries and constituency, but they have key differences in their purpose, operations, and structure. The LBWID and the LBA collaborate on many projects under their respective responsibilities.
